Blue Bloods Update About Frank’s Career Is A Hopeful Sign For The Show’s Future

CBS canceled Blue Bloods ahead of its fourteenth season, but an update on how Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan’s story ends indicates that the story may not be over after the series finale. The procedural drama, created by Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess, follows an Irish Catholic family (the Reagans), many of whom work in law enforcement, in New York City. Blue Bloods premiered in 2010 and, as proven by its 14-season run, has been a hit show for CBS throughout most of its years on the network. However, the series is reportedly becoming too expensive, resulting in Blue Bloods’ cancelation.

The second half of Blue Bloods season 14 contains eight episodes and is set to premiere in October 2024, with the series finale scheduled for December.

CBS split Blue Bloods season 14’s episodes into two halves, with the first part airing from February to May 2024 and the second premiering in late 2024. Of course, many were upset by the cancelation news, which led to a fan campaign to save Blue Bloods. Unfortunately, it didn’t work, and, as of the writing of this article, the show is still set to end with season 14. The good news is that it’s not over until it’s over, and the showrunner’s recent comments about how Blue Bloods ends could inspire some hope that the series can continue, after all.

Frank Reagan Will Not Retire In The Blue Bloods Series Finale
The Showrunner Spoiled Tom Selleck’s Character’s Fate

During an interview with TV Insider following the release of Blue Bloods season 14, episode 10, showrunner Kevin Wade teased how Frank Reagan’s story ends in the CBS series. When asked if Frank is seriously considering leaving his job as the New York City Police Commissioner, Wade said:

“I’m pretty sure that Frank would stay in his job until the series ended. We didn’t really pursue that avenue because the show is built on him being the police commissioner of New York City. So to take a detour during the last mile, if this is the last mile, I don’t know what he would be doing down at the hardware store or having coffee with old buddies during the day. I always have to look at stuff that generates stories. Police Commissioner of New York generates stories. He’s the CEO of 35,000 cops.”

It’s hard to imagine anyone replacing Frank as the Police Commissioner in Blue Bloods, and it appears as if fans won’t have to. According to Wade, the procedural drama will end with Frank still in the job that he has had since the show premiered in 2010. While the showrunner’s comments give viewers insight into how the CBS series will end, the quote also proves why there’s still hope for Blue Bloods season 15.

Why Blue Bloods Officially Being Canceled After Season 14 Is So Upsetting
CBS officially announced that Blue Bloods will end in December 2024. The news about the long-running series’ end is disappointing for a lot of reasons

Why Frank’s Fate Is A Good Sign For Blue Bloods’ Fate
Blue Bloods Can Continue After The Season 14 Finale

Kevin Wade’s Blue Bloods series finale tease suggests that the show’s story could theoretically continue following the last episode. The writers are seemingly keeping some storylines ongoing (like Frank’s run as the New York City Police Commissioner) in the event that CBS brings the series back for a fifteenth season or a Blue Bloods spinoff. The plot won’t come to a definitive end (like the death of Frank) that can’t be undone if the show were to continue. Consequently, Frank’s fate at the end of Blue Bloods is a good sign for its future.
