“Teddy’s the perfect character to go through this,” says Casualty star Milo Clarke, as we chat about Teddy’s sexual assault storyline. “Teddy’s a happy-go-lucky lad, he takes things in his stride. But he does struggle to talk about what’s happened to him. And this storyline shows it can happen to anyone.”
Teddy’s life was turned upside down during a recent shout, when he was surrounded in the back of the ambulance by a group of rowdy women on a hen do, and subjected to a sexual assault. He’s not been able to open up to anyone about it since – but that choice could be taken out of his hands this week whMiMen a video of the assault surfaces…
What was your reaction when Teddy’s story was pitched to you?
I was apprehensive to start with – it’s a big story. I felt a lot of responsibility to do justice to the people who’ve experienced it. I’m happy with the reaction, because it’s become a talking point. I’m proud they trusted me to tell this story through Teddy.
We don’t often hear stories about a man being sexually assaulted by a woman…
Exactly – if it was the other way round, a group of stags and a female paramedic, that would instantly be seen as a horrible thing. But with Teddy, there are questions: how did they overpower him? Shouldn’t he have enjoyed that? That’s the sort of attitude we’re trying to fight against, it’s not black and white.
Why is Teddy finding it hard to tell anyone what happened?
He cares what people think about him. Plus, his job is everything – his friends and family are there, he finds a lot of self-worth within that. He worries about losing his job, because it happened at work. There’s the fear that no one will believe him or it will just turn into a ‘he said, she said’ situation. It’s very sad, and that’s why a lot of victims shy away from speaking up.
