VIRGIN RIVER star Alexandra Breckenridge has warned fans they shouldn’t expect the series to perfectly match up with Robyn Carr’s original books after a dramatic cliffhanger set up an emotional fourth season.
Netflix have yet to confirm another instalment of the romantic drama, but the signs are looking promising after Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) revealed she was pregnant in yet another surprising twist for Virgin River. The series lead recently revealed more about the upcoming storyline, and hinted everything might not be as it appears with the new baby.
Mel Monroe may be having a baby with someone other than her small town beau Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) following some cryptic comments from the show’s lead.
Another outing of Virgin River is hoped to be on its way to Netflix soon following the startling revelation at the end of season three.
During the pair’s short lived break-up, Mel began the IVF process with her late husband’s embryos without Jack’s knowledge.
However, the couple soon got back together, and viewers are still unsure whether the process was a success or if Jack is the father.
Speaking recently with Us Weekly, Breckenridge confirmed she knows the identity of the father but is unable to reveal it at this point.
Furthermore, she revealed she would ‘love to see Mel become a mother’, suggesting the baby could be born as soon as the fourth season.
The star admitted: “With her history, her fertility issues and having a stillborn baby at such a late stage in pregnancy, you don’t know if she’s going to be able to.”
Hopefully Mel will be able to pull through with her current pregnancy, and she and Jack will be welcoming the newest member of their family in the coming episodes.
Virgin River enthusiasts will already know Mel and Jack have a son of their own named David in Robyn Carr’s series of novels.
Even so, showrunner Sue Tenney won’t necessarily be sticking to the original story as the television adaptation progresses.
Breckenridge said: “In the books, she does, but a lot of things are different in the series than in the books.
“But I would like to watch her journey of becoming a mother.”
A new addition to the village seems inevitable in season four, but the identity of the father of Mel’s bundle of joy could differ wildly to the source material.
In the same interview, showrunner Sue Tenney also weighed in on how the small screen version of Virgin River could differ from the novels.
She teased: “That’s something that we won’t answer until we get to the end of — if we get — a season 4.”
Tenney is keeping any specific plot details close to her chest as the creators of the series are still waiting for a greenlight from Netflix.
Still, both the head writer and star of the series are confident all will be revealed soon, which includes the unknown identity of Jack’s mystery shooter.
“If we get the actual reveal [in season 4], it would detail more of how this all was intertwined,” Tenney explained.
“The webbing of that story goes all the way back to the first season, so it’s a connective tissue that goes through four seasons.”
With plenty of puzzles still unsolved heading into a potential fourth outing, hopefully the series gets the go ahead any day now to start work on the highly anticipated follow-up.
