VIRGIN RIVER fans have uncovered some huge problems with the ongoing conflict between Mel and Charmaine, with many convinced their mysterious pregnancies don’t quite add up.
The fourth season of Netflix’s hit smalltown drama wrapped up with a shocking reveal – Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) is pregnant, but she doesn’t know who the father is. With another season of Virgin River on the way, viewers may have already spotted some major issues with the rest of the series.
Fans have offered a simple solution to Mel’s quandary at the end of Virgin River season four.
At the start of the finale, A Wedding, No Funeral and a Baby, Mel realises her IVF treatment has been successful and she’s now pregnant.
However, there’s also a small chance her boyfriend and potential fiancé Jack Sheridan (Martin Henderson) could be the father.
Meanwhile, his former friend-with-benefits Charmaine Roberts (Lauren Hammersley) is still convinced her twins belong to Jack.
With plenty of unanswered questions hanging over the forthcoming fifth season of Virgin River, Mel and Jack may have to raise a baby they’re not certain is biologically theirs.
Despite the final twist before the credits rolled on season four, some viewers aren’t convinced the mystery will remain for long.
One bemused fan took to Reddit recently to ask why Mel can’t just check who the father is when the baby is born.
User Cool-Fun-6796 posted: “I don’t know why Mel just can’t do a paternity test and get this whole story line wrapped up.”
Once Mel’s child has actually been born, a simple test should determine their parentage once and for all and put an end to Virgin River’s latest conundrum.
Looking at Charmaine’s progress throughout the series, though, it may be sometime before Mel is actually ready to give birth.
Virgin River has been renewed for both a fourth and fifth season, so Mel may be pregnant throughout the entirety of season four before giving birth in the follow-up.
Even so, it shouldn’t take much longer than a single instalment before Mel and the viewers finally find out who the baby’s father is.
Another fan also had some major issues with how Mel’s plan for a child went down in the finale.
Redditor Weibu11 replied: “This whole story is so dumb and unrealistic.
“You don’t just randomly call up the doc and get IVF like she seemingly did.”
Mel was thankfully able to go ahead with the procedure as she still had frozen embryos from her relationship with late husband Mark (Daniel Gillies).
Still, the process was much quicker and easier than this fan claimed it would have been in reality.
They questioned: “Also, wasn’t she only gone, like, a week or something?
“No way she’d know she was pregnant so fast unless it happened earlier (with Jack).”
Mel’s rapid IVF experience could be evidence enough to believe it was actually Jack who fathered her child.
Unfortunately, the clues are still inconclusive to provide a definite answer, so fans will just have to wait for season five to be released to find out the truth.
