At the beginning of the fifth season of “Virgin River”, Mel (Alexandra Breckenridge) is engaged and expecting Jack’s (Martin Henderson) baby. The couple’s happiness, however, is short-lived: after a devastating fire in the community, the character suffers a miscarriage and generates a major twist in the plot.
Mel and Jack’s Tragedy in “Virgin River”
Part of the public was shocked and even outraged by the tragedy imposed on the protagonists, but Patrick Sean Smith, creator of the Netflix series, guarantees that the dramatic event was fundamental in defining Mel’s character.
“Now we see this couple struggling together to get over this loss, because it was the one thing that literally killed their last marriage,” Smith said in an interview with Glamor magazine, referring to Mel’s previous relationship with Mark (Daniel Gillies), a since they were unable to overcome the trauma of the reproductive problems she experienced in the past.
Still according to the showrunner, following Mel and Jack in the same situation, but really persevering and coming out stronger and closer, seemed like the most logical reason. “It gave them a lot more depth and a lot more love,” he explained.
The first 10 episodes of the fifth season of “Virgin River” arrived on Netflix at the beginning of September and the last two, which are Christmas specials, are confirmed to premiere on November 3rd on the streaming platform.
