Virgin River showrunner spills on ‘complications’ for Jack and Mel after baby bombshell

VIRGIN RIVER returns to Netflix later this week for its second season and unfortunately for fans of Mel Monroe and Jack Sheridan, there will be heartbreak on the horizon.

Mel (played by Alexandrea Breckenridge) moved to remote Californian town, Virgin River, when she replied to ad to work as a midwife believing she could have a fresh start. However, she didn’t expect to find herself falling in love with her new home and even striking up a romance with Jack (Martin Henderson). Unfortunately, with the second season set to air later this week, Mel might be reassessing her move to Virgin River as Jack prepares to become a father to his ex Charmaine Roberts (Lauren Hammersley).

With Mel telling her sister she’s returning home, it looks like it’s all over for the couple. But Mel and Jack will struggle with their feelings for one another.

Showrunner Sue Tenney teased: “You’ll see Jack and Mel struggle against their attraction in season two, and you’ll see what happens if they succumb to it.

“You’ll see what that means for their future — and how that future gets massively complicated in the very last moments of the season.”

Will the couple be able to make things work in or will their love triangle just get even messier?

Jack star Martin explained his character feels a duty to being a good father due to his time as a Marine.

He told TV Line: “Being a Marine is such an integral part of who he is, and that extends to his responsibilities as a future father and his desire to be there for Charmaine.

“Unfortunately, those duties are often at odds with what Mel would want, which makes for a messy, complicated triangle between the three.

“They’re all after certain things, and the negotiation is clumsy.

“Charmaine, of course, manipulates things to the best of her abilities, and then it’s up to Jack and Mel to navigate that in a way honours themselves and each other.”

If Jack can convince Mel to stay in Virgin River and give their romance a go, it’s likely things will get complicated very quickly.

Being a midwife, Mel would likely have to come face-to-face with Charmaine, which could become awkward.

Mel will surely not enjoy having the fact Charmaine is expecting Jack’s baby being thrust in her face at every opportunity.

Furthermore, it’s been revealed the second season will delve into Jack’s background as he continues to struggle with his PTSD.

With the pressure of becoming a father weighing down on him, will he be able to cope?

Actor Martin has teased viewers will see “some of the things he’s still struggling with from Iraq”.

He explained: “He’s not just this romance novel hero. He’s flawed and he’s struggling.”

There certainly seems to be plenty of drama on the horizon for fans of Virgin River as the second season approaches.

Furthermore, the Netflix series has already been renewed for a third series hinting Mel and Jack might not be over for good – or could someone new come in and sweep Mel off her feet as Jack settles down with Charmaine?

Production on the third season is expected to begin later this year or when coronavirus restrictions will allow it.
